This month marks an incredible milestone for Lydia Gillis Photography: Celebrating 13 years in business! What a journey it has been—full of ups and downs, challenges and triumphs, and yes, a few late nights (and maybe some tears). But through it all, I’ve grown—not just as a business owner but as a person—and so has my business.
When I started Lydia Gillis Photography, it was fueled by my passion for photography. I was shooting everything and anything, eager to capture moments and create memories. It didn’t take long for me to discover the joy of photographing weddings and high school seniors. These sessions lit a fire in me, and I poured my heart and soul into creating what I now call the “LGP Experience” for my clients.
Six years later, personal branding photography found me organically, and let me tell you—I fell in love with it. But here’s the truth: when I started this business, I knew nothing about running one. I was naïve, to say the least. I quickly realized that passion alone wouldn’t cut it. If I wanted to thrive, I needed help. That’s when I made my first big (and terrifying) investment: hiring a business coach. It was hands down one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Learning the business side, crafting plans, and building strategies didn’t just help me grow my business—it gave me back my personal life.
This experience ignited another passion in me: sharing what I’ve learned with other entrepreneurs. And so, I began offering mentorships and online courses. This side of my business has been deeply rewarding, as I’ve watched others succeed and thrive.
Over the years, my business has pivoted. For 10 years, weddings and high school senior photography were my bread and butter. Transitioning away from them to focus on personal branding photography and education was bittersweet. It took me time to let go, but I’ll forever cherish the couples who trusted me to document their weddings—their first family legacies—and the amazing seniors who kept me young. Hosting fashion shows with them to support homeless shelters and raise awareness about human trafficking will always hold a special place in my heart.
Last year, another dream came to life: Live and Grow Retreats. It was born out of my deep desire to bring women entrepreneurs together in a space where they could not only learn but also thrive, transform, and lead with purpose. The first retreat last October exceeded all my expectations. Women from diverse industries came together to share their experiences, set actionable goals, and build meaningful connections. Witnessing the breakthroughs and transformations during that weekend moved me deeply. I knew then that this was only the beginning of something much bigger. And yes, more retreats are in the works! I’m currently finalizing the venue for the next one—stay tuned for exciting details. Born from my desire to empower women entrepreneurs, the retreats aim to help women thrive, transform, and lead with purpose. The first retreat last October was a huge success, and yes, there are more to come! I’m finalizing the venue for the next retreat—stay tuned!
There’s a saying, “It takes a village,” and I couldn’t agree more. To my clients who trusted me with their stories and invested in my vision: THANK YOU. To my coaches and mentors who shared their wisdom: THANK YOU. To my fellow women entrepreneurs, many of whom have become dear friends: THANK YOU. To my personal friends who lift me up in prayers and encouragement: THANK YOU.
And to my husband, Curt: you are my biggest cheerleader. This business was your idea. You believed in me before I believed in myself. Thank you for standing by me every step of the way.
Last but not least, I thank God for guiding me through this beautiful journey called life. (Yes, I know I sound like I’m giving an award acceptance speech, haha!)
Cheers to 13 amazing years, and cheers to what’s ahead. I’d love to hear from you—what are your favorite memories of working with Lydia Gillis Photography? Drop a comment, send me a message, or share your stories. Let’s celebrate together! Thank you for being part of Lydia Gillis Photography. Here’s to continuing to create, inspire, and grow together.
