Normally I don’t like courthouses. I actually dread the idea of having to go to a courthouse but this time was different. This date was marked on my calendar with a big happy face. It was a day we had been waiting patiently for few years now. A day that would change many lives forever, a day that our family would grow plus one. And it all happen in Courtroom 2!
Normally when we have a new member in our family we like to introduce them to the world. But today is not about an introduction because even though September 2, 2014 was the date that this special person officially became part of our family, truth be told he has been part of our family for a very long time. This post is more about honoring a special someone and the people around him that gave him and continue to give him unconditional love! It’s about honoring love and the gift of family. Luis came into our lives through the foster system when he was around two years old. My sister, Ofelia, a single parent at that time brought him into her care. At first it was suppose to be a short term thing but Luis grew into my sister’s heart and all of our hearts and quickly became one of the family. We all got use to having this gregarious, high energetic child around and when it was time for him to visit his maternal grandparents, he was always missed. It was a long processes for the adoption to be finalized and at times we didn’t think it was going to happen…always one thing our another. I still remember the day my sister told me the court date had been set and the adoption was finally going to happen. I was so happy for her, for Oscar, her soon to be husband, for Luis and for the whole family! Knowing that Luis was going to stay with us and physically be part of the family was a huge blessing and a time to celebrate!
We met on the lobby and hallways of the courthouse at 9 am in the morning. And as we waited with anticipation for us to be called in to Courtroom 2, I felt privileged to be there and witness something beautiful.
The family members that could make it, where there to offer support and celebrate!
My nephew, Luis, all dressed up. I was surprised that he kept his tie for the ceremony!
I loved that the kids where able to make it. These are some of the kids that Luis has grown up with! Some of them to young to realize what’s about to happen.
My sister, Ofelia. So happy that this day finally became a reality!
My Dad and little Nana!

These next images say it all!

And then it was Luis’ turn to say a few words and thank his mom and dad and everyone for being there!
And it’s OFFICIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sitting on the Judge’s chair!
During the ceremony the Judge asked us if we wanted to share a few words with the family. I wanted to say something but I was afraid if I did once I opened my mouth I was going to be a mess. So I want to take this opportunity now to say “Thank You” to Julie and Ed. Thank you for trusting my sister, Ofelia and Oscar. Thank you for believing in them and allowing the adoption to go through. I can only begin to imagine how hard this decision was for you. I think I can speak on behalf of my family and say that you have not lost a grandson but have gained a very large family! The day that we welcomed Luis into our family or lives , we welcomed you as well. I look forward to all the memories we are going to make as one family.
This man doesn’t say much but the love that he has for his son is undeniable! A picture is worth 1,000 words!
To my sister and Oscar, I want to say “THANK YOU” for having a selfless heart. For always putting everyone needs before yours. Your unselfish heart has not only blessed Luis (or Luisito like we like to call him) but has also blessed our family. You are both a true testament of what unconditional love is!
And to Luisito, today we honor you and all that you are! May you always know how special you are and how much you are loved! You are a gift from God and a blessing to our family. I love you FOREVER!
